Ready-to-copy prompts for Genogram designs

The right prompt can help define the generations, visual hierarchy, colours, and purpose of your chart before you generate it. Here are three ready-to-copy prompts for different genogram-inspired designs.

  • Prompt for an illustrated family tree chart

An illustrated three-generation family tree chart, warm cream background, hand-drawn botanical branches connecting each name, names set in an elegant serif with "The Adeyemi Family" as the heading, muted sage and terracotta palette, clean readable layout.

  • Prompt for a genogram symbol reference chart

A clean educational reference chart of genogram notation, white background, rows of labelled symbols with squares, circles and diamonds, each captioned in small clear type, heading "Genogram Symbols", muted blue palette, designed to be read from a distance.

  • Prompt for a minimal presentation family diagram

A minimal family diagram for a classroom slide, pale grey background, three tidy rows of simple geometric nodes joined by thin connecting lines, short name labels under each node, heading "Family Structure", restrained navy and grey palette.

Key features of Dreamina's Genogram creator

Dreamina approaches family diagram creation as a visual design task rather than traditional diagramming. Its image generation and editing features make it useful for illustrated family trees, educational charts, and presentation graphics.

Generate a family diagram from text and images

Generate a family diagram from text and images

Dreamina's AI image generator, powered by Seedream 5.0 Pro, processes your description to map generations, relationships, layout, and palette into a finished family diagram. You can also upload a rough sketch for its structure to guide the result. Names in quotation marks are rendered accurately, keeping key details clear.

Explore chart styles with an AI Agent

Explore chart styles with an AI Agent

Dreamina's AI Agent interprets one description and generates several design directions in a single session. You can compare an illustrated keepsake chart with a plain teaching diagram before choosing a style. The same process can create symbol reference charts for students learning genogram notation, making study materials more engaging.

Correct a name or label with Interactive editing

Correct a name or label with Interactive editing

Dreamina's Interactive editing processes a selected chart area and applies your prompt only to that section. As an image modifier, it can fix a spelling, recolour a family branch, or adjust a heading without regenerating everything. Since family details need corrections, editing one label keeps the rest intact while preserving its overall design.

Benefits of using Dreamina's free Genogram maker

A family history can become more meaningful when you can see and share it in a form that feels personal. Dreamina's genogram maker free tool helps you turn your research into something you can enjoy, understand, and pass on.

Make a chart worth hanging up

Make a chart worth hanging up

With Dreamina's AI diagram maker, you can move beyond clinical-looking diagrams that end up filed away. A styled family chart can feel personal enough to display, giving your family history a visible place in your home.

Skip the diagramming learning curve

Skip the diagramming learning curve

With Dreamina, you can describe your family structure instead of spending time learning symbol libraries, connectors, and canvas tools. This lets you focus on the people and relationships you want to remember, not the mechanics of drawing a chart.

Turn family research into a gift

Dreamina's AI art generator lets you give your genealogy research a more personal purpose. Instead of leaving your findings in a digital file nobody opens, you can create an illustrated family keepsake to share with parents or relatives.

How to make a family diagram with Dreamina's Genogram maker

Step 1: Describe the chart or upload a sketch

Open Dreamina, select "AI Image", and describe the generations, layout, colours, and style you want. You can also click the "+" icon to upload a rough sketch and use it as a layout guide. Add key names in quotation marks, such as "The Frank Family", to help preserve the wording. For example: An illustrated three-generation family tree chart, warm cream background, hand-drawn botanical branches connecting each name, names in an elegant serif, muted sage and terracotta palette, clean readable layout.

Describe the chart or upload a sketch

Step 2: Adjust settings and generate

After that, select "Image 5.0 Pro" by Seedream 5.0 Pro as the model, then set the output "Resolution" to 2K for sharper text and details. Choose "Aspect ratio" 16:9 landscape for a wide family chart or 3:4 for a portrait layout. Click "Generate" to create several variations and compare the layouts.

Adjust settings and generate

Step 3: Refine and download

Preview full screen to verify all names and headings. Use Interactive editing to correct spelling, recolour a branch, or refine a heading without altering the design. Click "Download" to save your chart for printing. For clinical genograms, use dedicated notation software.

What users say about Dreamina's online Genogram maker

Vera Drew

The prompt-based workflow makes it much easier to turn a family tree idea into something polished. I don't have to spend time arranging every decorative detail by hand.

Alex Morgan•August 3
Alice

Starting with a rough sketch is really useful when I already know how I want the family chart arranged. Dreamina helps turn that basic idea into a cleaner design.

Jordan Lee•August 7
Bob

I liked having different styles to compare. It made it easier to choose between something decorative for the family and a simpler graphic for a class project.

Chris Mehta•August 25
Cathy

Interactive editing makes small corrections easy. If a name or heading is wrong, I can fix that section without having to generate the entire chart again.

I like that I can describe the colours, fonts, and layout in one prompt. It makes creating a family-history graphic feel much less complicated.

Ethan Brooks•August 14
Emma

The reference charts make the different genogram symbols easier to understand. I found them especially helpful when using the design as a study aid.

Noah Carter•August 17
David

The higher-resolution output is useful when the chart needs to be printed in a larger size. The details stay much clearer for a wall display.

Daniel Scott•September 6

Dreamina works well for creating a decorative family tree or educational graphic. For formal clinical documentation, I would use a more specialised tool.

FAQs about Genogram makers

Can Dreamina produce a clinically accurate genogram?

No. Clinical genograms use strict McGoldrick notation and established symbols to document family relationships, health history, and behavioural patterns, while Dreamina is designed to generate artwork rather than structured clinical notation. It should not replace a clinical genogram tool for professional documentation. Instead, Dreamina works well for illustrated family trees, teaching visuals, and symbol reference charts.

What is the difference between a genogram and a family tree?

A family tree focuses mainly on lineage, showing parents, children, siblings, and other family connections across generations. A genogram builds on that structure by adding details such as relationship quality, medical history, and behavioural patterns. Dreamina is well suited to the family-tree and teaching side of this distinction, helping turn family information into clear, visually engaging charts.

What do the squares and circles on a genogram mean?

Squares represent males, circles represent females, and diamonds represent unknown or unspecified gender. These basic shapes help readers identify family members quickly when reading a genogram and are often combined with other lines and symbols to show relationships. For learning purposes, Dreamina can generate a labelled symbol reference chart that makes these conventions easier to study.

How is divorce shown on a genogram?

A single diagonal slash across the marriage line indicates separation, while two diagonal slashes indicate divorce. A dashed relationship line can be used to represent cohabitation, helping distinguish different types of partnerships on the chart. Dreamina can turn these conventions into a clearly labelled reference visual, making the symbols easier to review and understand.

How should generations be arranged on a family chart?

Generations are typically stacked vertically, with the oldest generation at the top and younger generations progressing downward. Within each generation, siblings are arranged from left to right in birth order, creating a clear structure that is easy to follow. When using Dreamina, you can describe the generations, sibling order, and preferred layout directly in the prompt to guide the resulting family chart.
